Current plans for Flood Defences - help with insurance problems
The Environment Agency’s (EA) consultation document “Managing flood risk on the Severn Estuary” (2011) has generally not been well received, not least because of the problems it may cause with the insurance and valuation of properties in the area. While this remains the case and until matters have settled, you may find the following contact useful.

They have decided to tackle litter as their major project.

RIVER DEFENCE PLANS RAISE CONCERNS FOR OUR PARISH continued...
Their overall strategy in our area is, over time, to move the present river defences inland, thus allowing large areas of land adjacent to the river to flood and revert to saltmarsh.
The EA project manager presented the plan at a meeting of Severn Voice parishes on February 22nd and met with some robust (and so far unanswered) questions from local parish representatives. These included concerns about inaccuracies in the maps showing where flooding will occur, the apparent “downgrading” of issues around national and global food production and food security, the lack of convincing cost-benefit arguments, and the effect of their present publications on insurance premiums or even insurability of our homes.
Their consultation document “Managing flood risk on the Severn Estuary” is available on the web at http://www.severnestuary.net/frms/publications.html. It is important we get as many responses to the EA as we can. Please read it and complete and return the attached questionnaire. If you have any questions about it, don’t hesitate to contact Roger Godwin who chaired the meeting with the EA and is in possession of the relevant detail.
Longney and Epney Parish Council are responding with interviews with the press, liaison with our MP Neil Carmichael who came to the meeting on 22nd and sits on the Whitehall Flood Committee, and a detailed set of questions on our particular area to the Environment Agency project manager.
This is an issue with serious current, medium and long-term consequences for us all. We shall be updating our responses on this website as it progresses.
