The school was founded in 1862 and its main building comprises a hall, kitchen/servery, library and two classrooms with three further classrooms at the back of the main building. There is also a large grassed area with football pitch, long jump pit, conservation area, adventure playground and a playground at the front of the school.
Each classroom is well equipped with personal computers and the school is linked through the Internet. The school offers various extra-curricular activities including choir, nature club, ICT and sports. Junior children are taken for climbing and dry slope skiing and children in Years 3 to 6 have the opportunity to go on a one-week residential visit.
Each year the school selects charities to support and raises money through sponsored events and non-uniform days. Within the framework of its controlled status the school fulfils the aim of a Church of England School, namely to provide high education for all pupils in the context of the Christian faith and practice. The school is over-subscribed with two applicants for every place.
Longney School takes action on litter
Longney school joined the Eco-Schools programme in September 2010, this is a programme for schools to follow, to address a variety of environmental themes. The children have carried out two environmental reviews, set action plans and taken action to improve the schools environmental performance.
We wanted to share with the wider community our achievements to date. Our Eco-team, which included children from all the year groups, a Teaching Assistant and a Parent, decided to tackle litter as our major project. We had a competition to design a poster on litter, displayed the posters, held a litter awareness assembly, audited the litter in school and have held regular litter pick ups. We took part in the 'Big Tidy Up', and picked up litter from the car park, maze and areas surrounding the school. We have been saving energy by taking part in 'switch on to switching off', and raised awareness to the whole school of reducing energy usage. We have been improving the biodiversity of the school grounds by planting more wild flowers, feeding the birds all year, and creating more habitats for bugs, mammals and other wildlife.
We have gained our first two awards – bronze and silver and we are soon to apply for the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. If anyone would like further information, or have any comments, please contact the school.

Longney School Wins Funds for Garden Club
Longney Primary School scooped the £5000 cash award in the 2009 Citizen’s Cash for Schools competition. The idea that won them the award was to use the funds to make a sustainable garden producing fruit and vegetables in a polytunnel, which they will then sell. The proceeds will be used to buy more seed for future years. It’s a long term investment from which the school as well as those who will be able to buy their fresh and truly local produce will reap the rewards for years to come.
Our inspection in June was the third time that Ofsted inspectors have visited our school. Every single judgement made by the inspectors was graded outstanding. You can read the report by clicking on the link below.
Longney School, through its distinctive Christian character, is outstanding in meeting the needs of all learners.
The school is outstanding in its commitment to developing the full potential of every child. and unashamedly identifies the values it seeks to promote, which uphold the teaching and example of Jesus. The children articulate these values with confidence and speak with pride about their school. The efforts of all learners, across every curriculum area, are respected and children feel their individual contributions are recognised fairly.
Learners speak enthusiastically about the many opportunities to experience new challenges and skills provided through the enhanced curriculum programme. These opportunities enable them to achieve in previously unexplored or unsuccessful areas and to celebrate success. The Early Riser maths support provision is particularly valued by parents and learners. Through discussion and debate, learners are encouraged to contribute to decision-making that affects the whole school. Children respect their surroundings and are appreciative of the efforts made by their teachers to make the school an interesting and attractive place in which to learn.
They understand and can discuss the school’s Christian vision and they respect and see as important the implications of ‘Do unto others as you would have them do to you’. This is also translated into their awareness of their global responsibility and charity support. ‘Seeing good in everyone’ is the Golden Rule that is most frequently identified by learners and parents as being a distinctive mark of the school. Spiritual development is encouraged and supported by the caring, family ethos which pervades the school.
This impacts enormously on the learners’ relationships with peers and adults. The whole atmosphere of the school provides a warm, caring and sincere welcome. Politeness is a natural expression of that welcome. Behaviour is excellent and all learners are considerate and helpful. Learners are supportive and compassionate of one another in times of emotional challenge. They speak with confidence about the ease of access to an adult at such times.
All stakeholders speak highly of the way in which concerns are addressed and conflicts avoided in a spirit of understanding and forgiveness The school provides many opportunities through displays, worship and in the restricted environment, for spiritual development and inward personal reflection.
Awe and wonder are also stimulated through other curriculum areas. Parents express complete support for the strong Christian ethos which permeates the whole of school life. Their active and enthusiastic support for the school through the curriculum and extra curricular activities is a mark of the high esteem in which the school is held.
